This may as well be one of the bad moves by social media giant. Just personal $0.02.
At a town hall meeting held on Tuesday at Facebook headquarters, Mark Zuckerburg, CEO announced that Facebook is working on a ‘Dislike’ button. After years of requests and speculation, it’s finally coming here. This button will be equal but opposite in reaction to iconic ‘Like’ button. Mark expressed that a ‘dislike’ button is expected to further make the community a realistic one. No longer will users have just one choice, he said and I paraphrase.
“People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years, and probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it,” Zuckerberg said.
The reason company held off on “Dislike” button was to avoid the social network from becoming a more Reddit-like community. Reddit employs an upvote and downvote system for its posts & comments. With ‘Dislike’ button shipped, Facebook celebrities & publications will have to modify their marketing strategy accordingly to avoid their posts getting “Dislikes”. This will likely improve the quality of content various popular Fanpages share & it will also discourage the sharing of irrelevant content, as is done in cases to get something in return.
“What they really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment,” Zuckerberg said.
“Dislike” button is something of an obvious yet controversial thing. It’s worth noting that Facebook has been up for more than 10 years, but within all that time, it avoided it. Seemingly it put it off. It’s got to be careful with the move, because it will have dramatically great impact across the community.
